WALDEVAR Energy and GEN-I Sonce expand partnership with a 220 MWh battery energy storage project in Romania

The next chapter of Europe’s energy transition will be defined by how effectively energy can be stored, managed and delivered to the grid. As battery energy storage moves from a supporting technology to critical energy infrastructure, WALDEVAR Energy and GEN-I Sonce are expanding their partnership with the signing of an EPC contract for a 55 MW / 220 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Gheorgheni, Romania.
The project represents another important milestone in the collaboration between the two companies, following the agreement signed earlier this year for the Gheorgheni 110 kV, 63 MVA Substation. Together, the two projects address two increasingly important elements of Romania’s evolving power system: the infrastructure needed to connect reliable and fast response power generation to the national grid and the storage capacity needed to balance the grid.
Under the agreement, WALDEVAR Energy will deliver 50MW/220MWh full EPC scope by Q3 2027 for the battery energy storage system, covering engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning.
Across Europe, battery energy storage is rapidly becoming a strategic investment. BESS stores electricity when it is available and releases it when it is needed, supporting the grid to manage fluctuations between supply and demand, respond to changing market conditions and provide greater flexibility to the grid. As electricity systems become more dynamic, large-scale storage is increasingly important for maintaining system stability.

The new agreement builds on the successful cooperation established between the two companies and reflects their shared commitment to accelerating the deployment of modern energy infrastructure across the region.
